Asia-Link Symposium: Moving Towards New Approaches To EU-Indonesian Cooperation In Higher Education

On Friday 31st October 2008 the first Asia-Link Symposium (ALS) in Indonesia was held in the Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta prior to the European Higher Education Fair (EHEF) Jakarta. The main objective of the Asia-Link Symposium was to address EU-Indonesia higher education policy and cooperation issues. The Symposium provided a platform for high-level dialogue between government officials, key senior managers and policy makers, and representatives from higher education institutions (HEI) and academic networks from Indonesia and Europe. Over 170 participants attended the Symposium.

The aims of the Symposium were to:

  • facilitate collaboration between EU and Indonesian higher education institutions
  • exchange information on policy issues and practices through sharing key development issues in academic cooperation
  • create a forum for strategic and policy dialogue to enhance mutual understanding of priorities and possible future cooperation areas
  • identify common agendas, possible cooperation areas and to develop mutually beneficial collaborative projects.

The symposium programme consisted of an opening ceremony, a morning plenary session, and afternoon parallel sessions. The following topics were addressed:
  • Developments in Higher Education Cooperation Between EU and Indonesia
  • Strategic Cooperation in Academic Mobility Between EU and Indonesia
  • Compatibility of Higher Education Systems in the EU and Indonesia
  • EU-Asian Initiatives to Promote Academic Partnerships
  • Good Practices of Asia-Link Projects for Networking and Achieving Sustainability
  • Good Practices in Research Cooperation and Links with the Industry

Following the Symposium, participants and EHEF exhibitors were invited to attend an evening reception to meet partners and colleagues to exchange experiences and information in an informal setting.

Matchmaking activities were also organised to enable representatives from European and Indonesian higher education institutions to meet and discuss possibilities for future cooperation.

The Asia-Link Symposium was an event of the European Commission and was implemented by a consortium composed of 4 European agencies: CampusFrance, DAAD, Nuffic and British Council. Nuffic was the main implementing agency for the Jakarta event.
